The Optimist Club of Hillsboro held its annual Student Appreciation Breakfast for middle school students. Four students from each of the schools are selected based on their involvement in their school and community, willingness to help others, leadership qualities, good citizenship and overall behavior.
The teaching staff of the school makes selections based on the above attributes as opposed to the usual grade and athletic achievements.
By school, the following students were recognized:
Poynter — Katie Vargas, Juan Martinez, Erendira Villagomez and Victor Garcia.
Brown — John Nick Beronilla, Claire Verstrate, Connor Melanson and Areyana Gardiner.
South Meadows — Mara Tencos Mendoza, Miguel Hernandez Luna and Nancy De la Cruz Bustos.
Evergreen — Claire Washburn, Joel Biamont, Maura Palumbu and Eric Reif.
Framed certificates and gift cards were presented to the students during the club’s weekly Tuesday morning meeting held at the Hillsboro Senior Center at 750 SE Eighth Ave. Their parents and teachers were present for the presentation and breakfast.
The Hillsboro Optimist Club is a nonprofit community service group involved in many youth orientated programs.
