The Hillsboro Argus
The following Hillsboro School District students and teachers were honored as part of the Hillsboro Optimist Club's 2010 Youth Appreciation program. Students and teaching staff from Hillsboro District middle schools were selected based on their outstanding involvement at school and in the community.
Some of the qualities the student selections were based on are leadership, academics, and involvement in community activities. Teachers are selected and honored for their advocacy of youth and positive impacts on youth in the community.
On April 6, the following students were honored.
Brown Middle School: 7th grade, Amarachi Nwokoma and Cody Chimienti; 8th grade, Aaron Bell and Vina Nguyen.
Evergreen Middle School: 7th grade, Haley Inman and Marcus Trinidad; 8th grade, Courtney Clayton and Devin Herbert.
Poynter Middle School: 7th grade, Andrew Baggarley and Sophia Coalwell; 8th grade, Ashley Driscoll and Vira Kang.
South Meadows Middle School: 7th grade, Jose Mendez and Stephanie Breazile; 8th grade, Marco Vasquez and Trisha Kuehn.
On April 20, the following teachers were honored: Jeremy Corwin of Brown Middle School; Louise Waugh, Evergreen Middle School; Amy Decoster, Poynter Middle School, and Krista Reiman, South Meadows Middle School.
The Youth Appreciation program recognizes young people based on a variety of qualities rather than being centered on only certain aspects such as grades or athletic achievement.
The Hillsboro Optimist Club presented students and teachers with certificates of appreciation and gift cards from Barnes and Noble. The Hillsboro Optimist Club is a nonprofit community service group that sponsors a variety of programs that involve community youth.
