Life Skills Program at Poynter Middle School
Amy Decoster (an Optimist Teacher of the Year a few years back) came to the 4/13 meeting to talk about the Life Skills Program at Poynter. She was accompanied by Selana Vanderaa.
This program addresses the needs of kids with physical disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, and cognitive disabilities. Students range from those who have significant function to students who are non-verbal.
As part of their education, Amy's classes do community things that encourage confidence and independence (like riding a bus or train, or going to an event). Many of her students would otherwise not have the opportunity.
One activity is swimming. Funding the monthly pool fee for each student is currently an issue. The Optimist Board is looking at this.
Amy’s presentation was informative and the definition of positive energy.
