School Resource Officers Making A Difference
Today's guest speaker, former Optimist Club member Patrick Hess, Student Resource Officer for Century High School discussed the work done by the Hillsboro Police Department's Youth Services Unit, which includes Student Resource Officers.
Hess explained the pleasure found in helping youth make good decisions before they leave the school systems and have no support systems in place. By building relationships with students, School Resource Officers hope to curb behaviors by youth that will be detrimental to their success in life.
As well as being a mentor for youth in schools, the School Resource Officers provide a sense of safety for students and teachers. In the light of such tragedies as Sandy Hook Elementary, School Resource Officers get to help ease the minds of families in the community.
